How Decision Trees Trip You Up

Here’s another fun way your smart mind helps you procrastinate:

It creates clever, beautiful decision trees of all the things that could possibly happen when you do your task/project.

And then, after you’ve exhausted yourself doing that, it decides it’s all futile anyway, because guess where every single human decision tree ends?

Yup.

Death.

So why even bother?

Let’s just #procrastinate until we die!

Because this happens at a subconscious level you usually don’t notice it.

You just decide it’s not a good idea to start work on your project. And you probably come up with some amazing rationalisations to support your change of plans (well done, creative brain!).

Being able to project into the future is one of your superpowers - but you have to learn to use it wisely.

Playing chess? You probably want to project into the future as fast and far as you can.

Sending a parcel? No! Do NOT go into all the options and decisions. You’ll probably end up crying in your bed.

Thinking about buying a house? Yes! Make a decision tree for sure (just don’t expect it to predict the future).

Thinking about an Instagram post for your business?

No! No! No!

Especially when it comes to doing marketing, thinking about and trying to predict everything that could possibly happen is killing.

Not only will you exhaust yourself in going over the (infinite) possibilities, you’ll also get to visit some ugly places (hello haters!) which will discourage you even more from speaking up about the amazing thing you do.

So.

You have a smart mind.

Manage it wisely.

Whenever you notice your brain going down the path of exploring all the options, results, reactions stop it.

Take a deep breath.

And take some immediate, simple action on the project or task at hand.
